I have a serious love affair with New York City. It all started a couple of years ago during our first trip to this incredible city. During our fly in flight path into JFK airport I saw the iconic Manhattan skyline and Lady Liberty. It gave me goosebumps and I just knew this was going to be my kinda city.
I’ve been handing out advice ever since to friends, colleagues and family who are visiting NYC – my main tip is always: just soak up the atmosphere. There’s something special about New York that’s just difficult to explain. I start to de-stress when I get out of one of those yellow cabs after the plane ride. Practically no one believes me by the way, but my husband has the same feeling. People think of New York and think of the hustle and bustle. That might be true if you live there, but as a tourist, I feel right at home. And here’s 6 reasons why:
1. The epic NYC skyline.
NYC has some amazing buildings and the skyline seems to change every year, like in 2014 with the opening of One World Trade Center. One of our new all time favorites is the Frank Gehry building, a must see.
2. All the NYC parks.
Since the opening, the High Line has been a big success. It takes you on a trip through the Meatpacking District on an elevated level. My other favorite place to be is Bryant Park, next to the NYC Library. There’s little tables and chairs littered all over the place, there’s live music and the occasional flash mob. Don’t be afraid to leave Manhattan too, cross the Brooklyn Bridge into the Brooklyn Bridge Park. It offers the best views on Manhattan and for the kids, there’s an amazing restored carousel that’s covered up during rain and winter times. Lots of picnic tables too.
I always say: enter NYC with at least half an empty suitcase and leave with a jam packed one. An empty suitcase is even better …
4. Coney Island
Home of the Cyclone. Home of the Wonder Wheel. And home of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs and it’s annual hot dog eating contest. To get to Coney Island you have to take quite a long metro ride, but it’s worth it. It’s faded glory at it’s best, and the boardwalk has been completely restored.
5. The People of New York.
They make this city magical.
There are over 24.000 restaurants in this city, so don’t let me hear you say that you found nothing to eat! All cultures and dishes are represented and it you can eat 7/7 and 24/24 here.
