Before we went to Chicago, I heard about the magic food that was the Cuban sandwich, the “cubano”. I had been to Florida many many times before, and stupidly never went to a place where they served them. Then came the movie Chef! where Jon Favreau cruises through the USA with a foodtruck, selling “cubanos” all along the way. I was hooked. On the movie and on the fact that I just had to try one for myself.
I just got back from a week in Chicago. My very first trip to the Windy City. Expectations were high, as I had gotten a lot of raving reviews from friends, colleagues and fellow travellers. You can expect a lot of reviews over the next few blogposts 😉
As a surprise, my husband treated us to a night’s stay in the LondonHouse hotel. It recently opened, about 4 months ago (we were there at the end of Sept ’16) and it’s part of the Hilton hotel chain.
I’m more and more considering Ostend as my hometown. I think people start to look at me as a local too, as I’m constantly there for work – and for eating out. Don’t get me wrong, Bruges is still my n°1 restaurant city, but Ostend just feels more homely.
During my recent trip to Miami, a visit to the Cecconi’s restaurant in South Beach was very high up my list of to do’s. Thanks to their easy to use website, I booked a table for our first dinner there. First tip: make reservations beforehand. It’s almost always completely booked up, and if it’s not, you might have to have dinner at the reception area of the Soho House where it’s situated and you miss out on one of the most gorgeous dinner locations you’ve ever been.
So I’ve been in Miami for a couple of days, one of those short “in and out” city breaks that leave you immersed in a part of the world, but also craving for more. Winter time feel always quite long once you pass the new year marker, so I always try to book my ticket to the sun at the beginning of March. Coincidentally, close to or overlapping with my birthday. This year, I went back to Miami – I was there the previous year as well with the first direct Jetairfly flight into the Miami Dade airport. It’s great for me that we’re now connecting the States with Belgium and at affordable prices too!
Anyway, I had the pleasure to stay at the newly reopened Riu Plaza hotel. Riu has several concepts, Plaza being the citytrip hotel of the lot. By the end of 2015, they’re hopefully opening a Plaza in New York, close to Times Square too. Yay 🙂 Riu Plaza is a totally new concept to me, so I was curious to see what the difference might be with a ClubHotel or a Palace.
I received a sweet e-mail from a reader called Ulla last Friday. She went to have lunch at Bentley’s after reading the restaurant review and was happy to have found a lunch spot that not’s your typical “fish restaurant by the seaside”. I decided to dedicate this blog post to her and add a review of another one of my favorite restaurants in Oostende, ‘t Groote Huys.
